Created in March 2005 with seven local people, we are a completely voluntary branch, raising and collecting monies to enable the British Legion to carry on their welfare and benevolent work for all current and ex service personnel. Our branch encompasses not only Weldon but Priors Hall, Deene and Deenethorpe.
Our Chairman, Mr Des Wallington, has been chair since the founding of the branch and is assisted by a Treasurer, Secretary, Welfare Officer, Memorial Manager, Poppy appeal organiser and a Social committee. To date we have 25 members but unfortunately due to ill health our official meetings only have an attendance of approximately 40%.
Members are invited to the monthly meeting which takes place on the first Tuesday of each month, 7.30pm at Weldon Cricket Club. This is a social meet with the exception of once a year being the AGM. We also host three quiz nights over the year which are always very well supported with each one raising an average of over £800. These nights are sponsored by local businesses and groups with donations also being received in the form of raffle prizes and prize money.
Poppy collectors are always busy in the run up to Remembrance Sunday and we always need more. During 2018 we raised in excess of £3,000 which includes house to house collections as well as the unmanned outlet boxes at various places including Public houses, Weldon Londis, Weldon School, Starbucks etc.
As with most voluntary organisations that are charities the most important assets are its members. A membership is just £20 per year and we would love to welcome any new members who wish to join us.
